| Who watches the Watchmen? | |
| 29 April 2008 Did anyone see Watchdog last night? They love a good dodgy kitchen fitter story over there at the BBC don't they and this was particularly milked for its full drama. Tearful families sat in a building site of a kitchen lamenting how the whole thing has been a "nightmare" - you get the picture. In this case it was a kitchen "makeover" company who come over and change all the doors and worktops of your current kitchen rather than fit a whole new one and therefore, supposedly, save you money. Turns out, according to Watchdog, that they weren't the most straightforward company in the industry. They even had an ex-employee wistfully looking out to sea as his voiceover explained how hard it was to contact the owners. A bit over the top if I'm honest, it's hardly the Profumo affair. This is all meat and drink to TV producers though. A new kitchen, bathroom, conservatory, driveway, roof, or extension are all huge purchases and investments for the average household so when they go horribly wrong it can be hugely distressing. But why is this all the general public ever sees on TV about this industry? The kitchen sector in particular gets more coverage on an average series of Watchdog or Rogue Traders than the rest of the media combined. And where was the representative from the kitchen industry stepping in to give balance and assure the watching public that it's actually very rare? Difficult isn't it? Can you think of anyone who should be in Nicky Campbell's phone book when they're doing stories like this? Andrew Davies | |
