| What's in store? | |
| 23 March 2009 Part of my job here on kbbreview is to keep a close eye on what's happening in kitchen and bathroom showrooms up and down the country. Not much lately you might be thinking, and you'd probably be right, but anyway we include a couple of these stores each month, either as showroom profiles or as 'Showroom Masterclass' features, which aim to look a bit deeper into what makes a kbb business really work. Choosing which ones to feature isn't always easy. Maybe you think we all sit down and spend a couple of weeks researching these places. Maybe you think we're looking only for the very biggest and best that the industry has to offer? Well, to be honest nothing could be further from the truth. For one thing, we don't have the time or the inclination to trawl through thousands of showrooms that may or may not be worth featuring. And for another, sometimes it's the little one-man band outlets in the back streets - the ones that have been doing good business for years - that are just the places we should be looking at. A £20m turnover is all very well, but what about the more typical stores that are riding out the downturn on a tried and trusted strategy well worth hearing about? Or even the ones that are slowly sinking into the abyss? Maybe they're just as worthy of inclusion, and perhaps more typical of what's really happening out there? And that's where you come in. OK, we get the usual requests from showrooms lucky enough to have their own PR machine working for them. And admittedly these kind of stores are often well worth a look. But are we looking at the right businesses, or are we just featuring the ones we've been told about? Have a look at a few we've put on the site if you like. Are they representative of the kind of stores you want to hear about? Are we asking them the right questions? Or should we be asking things we haven't even thought of? Do you want to know who their suppliers are and what their footfall is? Or would you rather know who in the industry they really, really hate? Or why they're planning a new life running a transsexual nightclub on the Algarve? Recently we reckon we've improved the Showroom Masterclass feature by taking along a showroom expert to give their views on the store in question. It gives us a fresh perspective on what works and what doesn't and so far the feedback has been positive. But believe it or not, we're still short of showrooms to feature. So if you know of one that you think might interest us, for whatever reason, please let us know. They don't have to be a success story, they don't have to be a 'centre of excellence', they don't even need to have a disabled toilet. We're always on the look out for new stores to cover so feel free to drop us a line. A hook to hang the story on always helps - an anniversary maybe, or a showroom revamp, even a major fraud investigation, anything will do. Your feedback is what keeps this magazine ticking, so we hope to hear from you soon... tim@kbbreview.com
