MARKET VIEW: Darren Peake
06 January 2010

One of the top trends is an increased emphasis on load size capacity, allowing people to wash and dry bigger loads, less frequently.

We are also seeing consumers looking for products that will give them clear energy-saving benefits as well as helping the environment. The style of an appliance, and how it blends in with a consumer's kitchen design, is becoming increasingly important, as people strive to create the perfect kitchen.

This has become even more prominent with more people dining in, entertaining and with the popularity of combined living room and kitchen spaces.Black appliances have really taken off and are doing extremely well in the market place which shows that many people are moving away from more traditional colours such as white, to bolder colours such as black.

Kitchen designs also play a huge role in colour trends.Laundry appliance design not only has to consider colour and the overall aesthetics, it also has to incorporate technical and functional features that not only get the job done but make doing so simpler for the end user.

Laundry appliances are constantly evolving and there are so many useful features that bring substantial consumer benefits available on appliances throughout the market and across all budget levels. Hotpoint's Eco cycles, for example, in some cases can ensure energy savings of up to 50% by adjusting elements of the wash process.

The introduction of 'steam' settings also give the consumer extra benefits such as increased antibacterial cleaning and reduced creasing. The needs of consumers are constantly evolving and our designers are always looking at ways to innovate and introduce new technology to suit. Consumer research and product face value tests are a key way to gather that information and feedback on ideas within the early stages of new product development.
