Ben Burbidge, managing director at Burbidge, looks at the how traditional kitchen design is faring in the contemporary market...

Traditional kitchens have evolved greatly over recent years to be more innovative and fashion-led.

While by definition, the essence of a traditional design remains about capturing a broad, timeless appeal for a kitchen that stands the test of time, consumers are increasingly looking for new and inventive ways to make subtle changes to their kitchen and keep it up to date.

One of the most noticeable developments in traditional kitchen design has been a distinctive move away from fussy detailing, such as open units or castellated moulding, in favour of a more modern paired down styling.

Conversely, as consumers get more creative, the market has devised more ways for them to individualise their traditional kitchens, with designs tailored to suit each consumer. Distinctive accessories, such as eye catching open units, freestanding cabinets and chunky end panels are increasingly popular, allowing homeowners to emphasise the traditional style or add a modern feel, according to personal tastes.

Curves are also becoming a more important element in a traditional kitchen. Colour is another big trend as consumers are becoming more adventurous. Painted finishes, particularly softer shades are now very popular in traditional designs, as are kitchens which mix different colours or timbers.

Demand for fashionable in-frame designs is also gathering pace so we have worked to create kitchens that appeal at every level.

Going forward, it is important to keep traditional and classic ranges up-to-date, in order for designs to remain relevant to today's modern consumer seeking traditional styling.

Experimenting with designs and new timbers, colours and finishes is all part of this process and a way of ensuring that traditional designs meet the ever changing demands of today's modern consumer.
