DESIGN VIEW: Sally Storey

Sally Storey, design director at John Cullen Lighting, explains why bathroom designers need to understand the potential of lighting...

I think most consumers are really "in the dark" about what the right lighting solutions can achieve in their bathroom design and what solutions are actually available for them to choose.

Their imagination is often limited to thinking that a few down lights in the ceiling will do the trick. However, the key to effective bathroom lighting and creating atmosphere and drama is choosing the right product and placing it in a way that will create the right atmosphere. Feature lighting can be added to create atmosphere.

We encourage our customers to broaden their imagination and to consider placing lights in areas that they may not realise are possible. For instance, recessed spots in alcoves or waterproof uplights behind the bath almost recreate a candlelit effect, or a floor washer as a night light or to create a glow under a basin. Task lighting to the face is important and the most flattering way is to light the face evenly from either side.

It's not all about placement either, the right lighting controls can create a wide spectrum of atmospheres. Dimmers are a must as they allow you to change the mood of the room for different occasions. The latest trends in bathroom lighting combine an element of halogen light with new technology like energy-saving LED bulbs.

Sadly I don't think enough bathroom designers understand the full potential of lighting and how, for example, good lighting can bring simple white room sets to life. A good bathroom showroom should incorporate a variety of lighting to show the options available and what the power of light can achieve.

We find that consumers visiting the John Cullen showroom are looking to be educated on choosing the right lighting and where and how they can incorporate it into the design of their bathroom effectively.
