DESIGN VIEW: Yorgo Lykouria
11 March 2010

Yorgo Lykouria, a product designer for Alape, gives his perspective on basin design...

The idea that the bathroom is merely a functional space is gone. We have come to realise that the bathing and waking ritual is an important part of our lives and something to be celebrated.

For me, the bathroom is a part of the house or building to which it belongs and a part of the life of the occupants. The bathroom is something specific not standard and should therefore be tailored to the exact needs of whoever is using it.

Currently, petite, sit-on bowls combined with contemporary wall-hung furniture are a popular choice for en suite bathrooms. White remains a popular choice, but the demand for black basins is showing a significant increase.

Basins and units that cleverly incorporate storage in an all-in-one compact piece are also proving popular as they are a practical, space-saving option suitable for en suites and cloakrooms.

Today's consumer is far more interested in excellent design than ever before.

Not only do they want a practical and functional basin that will last, but also an iconic design-led piece. It has to have meaning and joy for the user. There are a number of ways to approach good bathroom design.

This gets slightly harder when it comes to designing a bathroom where space is limited. The bathroom has to be functional but still has to look good. Thinking about what products can be eliminated and what the customer can live without is a good place to start. The result will then be beautiful, regardless of its size.
