Positive year for Howden

Howden Joinery, one of the biggest kitchen retailers in the UK, saw sales drop in 2009 but is predicting higher profits thanks to a Christmas boost.

Sales for the year to the end of December were £756 million, down 3.5% on 2008 - however, excluding depots opened in 2008 and 2009, sales had declined by 4.6%.

But in the last three months of the year sales of around £220 million were over 6% higher than the same period in 2008, mainly due to three trading days in the Christmas week.

"The gross margin performance in the final periods of the year continued to be strong and, taken together with the sales performance, it is now expected that profit before tax for the year will be comfortably above the top end of the current range of market expectations," the company said.
