Bedrooms: the state of the market
30 March 2010

The bedroom sector is looking flat for the future, but there are someopportunities for those who look, says Mark Waddy from MTW Research...

Research for our new bedroom furniture market report values the market at £620 million in 2009, down from £690 million in 2008, reflecting the difficult trading environment in recent years.

While the sector is forecast to experience some 'bounce' in 2010, to reach around£635 million, the impact of high inflation is likely to result in this sector remaining at best static in real terms across most product sectors during this year.

The threat of imports driving down average prices continued throughout 2009, as larger multiple retailers sought to reduce sourcing costs by procuring an increasing proportion of stock from Eastern Europe and the Far East.

The threat is clear when considering that imports stood at £397 million in 2007 rising by 5% to £417 million in 2008 before declining in line with the overall market during 2009 to £373 million.

Our estimates are that imports now account for around two-thirds of the market by value, with this likely to rise further during 2010.Despite a relatively lacklustre forecast for the bedroom furnituremarket in 2010, there are clear areas of opportunity to exploit, both for retailers and manufacturers. Indications are that the higher value to luxury end of the market should start to offer some relief to bedroom furniture suppliers in early 2010.
