Real design skills will always have a value, just ask the fitters who have to install the work of substandard ones, says Mitchell Wilton...

How right Peter Hill is in his blog. As a kitchen designer and ex-fitter, who has suffered fools and wannabees in this industry for over 25 years, it is refreshing to read his views regarding the worth of real design service.

For far too long this is an area that has been infiltrated by Joe and Josephine Bloggs who have been made redundant from their unrelated fields only to profess to being a kitchen or bathroom designer one or two weeks later.

This is nothing new, as a fitter for many years I have seen and had to fit or amend a lot of the work of these coves, and now as a designer I see many who have absolutely no idea of the practicality of how a kitchen will fit, and many of these people have being doing the job for a long time - which only goes to prove they will never get there.

As long as the sheds and other multiples employ dross this situation will continue and the worth of a true professional planning service will be undermined.
