Water Week approaches

Back
May Water Saving Week

Water Saving Week, the annual event focused on promoting water efficiency, will be held from June 12 - 18. The theme this year is  'three reasons to save water - save energy, save money, be green.'

Now in its second year, Water Saving Week is a DEFRA-backed nationwide campaign which is supported by regulators, trade associations including the BMA, industry and government-funded business support organisations.

The Water Saving Week website, www.watersavingweek.org.uk, contains information on how to save water for both individuals and businesses, as well as the opportunity to pledge support.

Shawn Coles, founder of Water Saving Week said: "Climate change, the greenhouse effect and global warming are now on everyone's agenda. However water saving has not had the attention it deserves. Businesses of all types and sizes use water and it is crucial that they think about ways of reducing their impact on the environment through practical and sustainable measures. We believe Water Saving Week is a perfect opportunity to do this."

The Water Saving Week theme:

Save energy - Energy is used to heat the water that comes out of your hot tap and treat dirty water when it disappears down your plug hole.

Save money - If you're on a water meter, the price you pay is tied to the amount of water you use. By conserving hot water, you're also lowering your fuel bill.

Be green - Wasting water uses more energy which causes more CO2 emissions.

New products get Waterwise Marque

Seven new high performing water saving products have been awarded the Waterwise Marque.

The Marque is awarded annually to products which reduce water wastage or raise the awareness of water efficiency. Over 60 products from more than 40 manufacturers have been awarded the mark since it was established in 2007.

Qualifying products are chosen twice a year by a panel of independent experts. The new products include two slimline dishwashers from Indesit, a greywater recycling unit from Vado, Roca's combined basin and toilet the W+W, and a low volume dual flush toilet from Twyford.

Jacob Tompkins, MD of Waterwise, said: "The Waterwise Marque was the first label of its type in the UK and the number of products now being awarded is a testament to the fact that manufacturers and consumers now consider water efficiency when purchasing products."

With over 60 products now being awarded the Marque it means that consumers now have a wide range to choose from when buying new products for the home or garden. Using these products can help us all reduce the water we waste by up to a third, saving money on water bills, energy bill and reducing the stress on our water supply."

Waterwise, an independent non-profit organisation focused on decreasing water consumption in the UK, stresses that the Marque scheme operates alongside the BMA's Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme.
