The winner of Time to Change – the oldest working fridge competition, organised by the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances (AMDEA), has been announced.

Time to Change is the UK segment of a pan-European programme, organised by European Committee of Domestic Equipment Manufacturers (CECED), to encourage the replacement of 188 million old (10 years and older), energy-hungry, large domestic appliances still in use across Europe.

This year’s winner Mr Edmund Garrod of High Wycombe won the with a fridge that had been in his family for 56 years. The refrigerator was orginally his mother’s, who to chose it over a television as it would be a more practical addition the home.

Mr Garrod received the brand new, WBC3546, A+ energy efficient fridge freezer, from domestic appliance specialist Whirlpool as a price for winning the competition.

“This is a fabulous prize and I am looking forward to the huge difference it will make,” he said. “It was silly to hold on to the old model when a new one is much more effective and environmentally friendly, and will save me a considerable sum of money every year.”
