faq

The kbbreview Retail & Design Awards is a prestigious annual event celebrating its 22nd year in 2016. It rewards retailers, designers and manufacturers in the kitchen and bathroom industry and is organised by kbbreview, the sector’s leading business magazine for over 30 years.

Our categories are split into two disciplines – retail and design. They are open to any retailers, designers and manufacturers of kitchen and bathroom projects in the UK and Ireland. Independents, multiples and franchisees are all welcome to enter and it’s totally FREE.

The design categories are open to ANY designers of kitchens and bathroom projects that have been installed in a real residential home. In other words, they are not for concept or showroom designs. One-off designs for a showhome or developer are eligible for the design awards.

The categories are:

Kitchen Designer of the Year: project cost over £50,000
Kitchen Designer of the Year: project cost £30,000 - £50,000
Kitchen Designer of the Year: project cost up to £30,000

Bathroom Designer of the Year: project cost over £25,000
Bathroom Designer of the Year: project cost £10,000 - £25,000
Bathroom Designer of the Year: project cost up to £10,000

You can enter as many categories as you like but only one design per category.

The retail categories reward the very best retailers and showrooms and are open to ANY retailers of kitchens and bathrooms in the UK and Ireland. Multiple retailers MUST choose one specific showroom to enter.

The categories are:

Kitchen Retailer of the Year
Kitchen Showroom of the Year
Bathroom Retailer of the Year
Bathroom Showroom of the Year

The Retailer of the Year awards are for the best all round retailers looking at factors including business success, marketing, showroom, customer service and after-sales. The Showroom of the Year categories look specifically at how well designed showrooms are and their effectiveness for the target market.

One entry form puts you forward for both the Retailer of the Year and Showroom of the Year categories.

There are two categories just for manufacturers that recognise the hugely important role new product development takes in the industry. These awards recognise specific product innovation and are open to individual products launched to the industry in the previous 12 months.

Kitchen Product Innovation of the Year
Bathroom Product Innovation of the Year

Products must’ve been launched in the 12 months up to November 24th 2015.

Only one product per brand is allowed.

‘Products’ can be literally that or a piece of technology that is applied across a collection of products.

The products must be commercially available.

The judges score each design project against these criteria. Each carries an equal weight towards the final score.

• Aesthetics
• Meeting and exceeding the brief
• Problem solving
• Product and material choice
• Unique ideas and initiative
• Value for money

What judges do NOT include in their deliberations:

Whether it is contemporary or traditional – the brief is the most important thing

Writing ability or photography quality

RETAILER

The judges score each retailer against the following criteria. Each carries an equal weight towards the final score.

  • Demonstrable business success
  • Staff policies and training
  • Marketing to target audience (includes online)
  • Unique ideas and initiative
  • Showroom effectiveness for target audience
  • Product and supplier choice for target audience

What judges do NOT include in their deliberations:

  • Size of company – They judge the business on its merits not its size.
  • Size of turnover – They are not looking for who is making the most money. Business success is relative to circumstance.
  • Market position – Premium, mid-market or entry level retailers have as much chance as each other. The key is the definition of target audience.
  • Writing ability and photography quality

SHOWROOM

The judges score each showroom against the following criteria. Each carries an equal weight towards the final score.

• Layout
• Effective use of space available
• Customer journey
• Displays and product choice
• Unique ideas and initiative
• Effectiveness as sales tool
• Customer presentation areas
• Housekeeping

What judges do NOT include in their deliberations:

• Showroom size – No more weight is given to big showrooms than small
• Overall business success – It is purely about the showroom design
• Market position – Premium, mid-market or entry level retailers have as much chance as each other. The key is the definition of target audience.
• Writing ability and photography quality

It’s really simple. You scroll down to the next page where you click on the category you’re interested in.

Click on the button that says ‘Get your entry form’. A window will pop up asking for your contact details, fill it in and you will receive an email from us with a link through to download the relevant entry form.

The form is a simple Word document, so save it and fill it in at your leisure. When you’re ready, email the form and all the supporting photos back to us using the instructions on the form.

Samples of the form with example answers can be downloaded by scrolling further down this site.

Absolutely nothing, it is completely FREE to enter.

The closing date is midday on November 17th.

PLEASE NOTE, THERE WILL BE NO EXTENSIONS.

The judging process for the kbbreview Awards is unique in its focus and detail. We have several stages to make sure the entering is easy but winning is hard!

In the design categories, the submitted entries are viewed by a panel of expert judges and narrowed down to four finalists per category. Those finalists are then invited to London to make an in-person 15-minute presentation.

In the retail categories, the submitted entries are also viewed by an expert judging panel. They choose four finalists for each category and then, over the course of several weeks, each one is visited by a judge to see the business up close and really understand how it ticks.

All the finalists are invited, along with a partner, to the black-tie awards ceremony on Monday, March 7th, 2016 at the Hilton Metropole Birmingham.

There are three awards given out at the event that do not require entries to be submitted. The Kitchen Customer Service of the Year and Bathroom Customer Service of the Year finalists and winners are chosen by the famous kbbreview Mystery Shopper from the best showrooms she’s visited in the previous 12 months.

The Special Achievement Award is chosen by the editorial team of kbbreview and goes to an outstanding individual who has made a significant contribution to the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom industry.

Entering the kbbreview Retail & Design Awards has never been easier, all you need to do is follow these steps and you can’t go wrong...

STEP ONE
Pick your categories
Remember that you can enter as many as you like but you can only enter each once. In the design categories, you cannot submit the same design more than once and in the business categories multiple retailers must choose one specific showroom.

STEP TWO
Get your pictures together
Every entry will need supporting pictures that show your design or showroom to the best effect. Pictures should be JPEGs with as high a resolution as possible.
It is HIGHLY ADVISABLE to include plans and elevations if at all possible. Also it’s very useful to include CAD renderings but you MUST have photos of the actual project too. Please DO NOT send photos embedded in PDFs or Word documents.
Make sure you have pictures that show the complete project or showroom as much as possible.

STEP THREE
Have a look at the samples
Take a look at the sample entries. That way you’ll know what information you’ll need to include when you come to do yours and you can read through the questions on the form. The samples are there purely to give you a nudge in the right direction rather than tell you exactly how it needs to be done.

STEP FOUR
Fill in the form
Click on the ‘Get Entry Form’ button and you’ll be asked to enter some simple contact information. You’ll then be sent an email with a link through to the relevant form. The form is a simple Word document that you can save and fill in at your leisure. When you’re finished you just email it back to us with the accompanying pictures. Again, DO NOT embed the pictures in the document or PDF.
Remember that judges have loads of entries to get through so be succinct and use bullet points to highlight key facts. It may sound obvious, but fill in ALL the answers.

STEP FIVE
Ask for help
Email awards@kbbreview.com or call 020 8515 2113 if you have any questions and we’ll help as much as we can.

STEP SIX
Remember the closing date
Get your entry to us by the closing date – no later than midday on Tuesday, November 17th, 2015.
There will be NO EXTENSIONS to the deadline.
