Indesit Company issues dryer fire risk warning

‘A significant number’ of Hotpoint, Indesit and Creda tumble-dryers have been identified as having a fault that could pose a fire risk, warns Indesit Company.

Customers are being warned not to leave their dryers unattended and to remove excess fluff after use to avoid it coming into contact with the heating element and catching fire.

Models affected were manufactured between April 2004 and October 2015. Machines produced after October 2015 have already been fitted with the modification.

The company is contacting customers to arrange for a service engineer to call and carry out a free modification. Customers are being urged to check if their particular model is affected by going to special websites set up by the company. These are http://safety.hotpoint.eu and http://safety.indesit.eu.

An Indesit Company spokesman told ITV: “We estimate that a significant number of units will be affected, but at this stage, we cannot speculate regarding the specific figure.

“These products were marketed in the UK and a number of other countries over the past 11 years, so we would expect a fairly large number of them to be affected.”

The warning follows an investigation by Whirlpool’s global safety experts after the US appliance giant acquired the Italian firm last year.
