Charlie Smallbone signs up with Fired Earth
23 June 2009

Charlie Smallbone, founder of Smallbone of Devizes, has a new job working with Fired Earth just months after his company was sold.

Smallbone plc went into administration at the beginning of March after falling sales and problems with cash flow scuppered the premium market company as it expanded into the US. In addition to the Smallbone of Devizes brand, the company also owned Mark Wilkinson Furniture - both of which were bought by entrepreneur Leo Caplan - and Paris Ceramics, which was snapped up by De Ferranti.

Now Charlie Smallbone has joined Fired Earth to help improve its kitchen offer working on design, innovation and new features across ranges including Bastide, New England and Jura.

It is not Smallbone's first involvement with Fired Earth, in the 1980s he was a shareholder. The company now has 58 shops across the UK, 20 of which feature substantial kitchen displays.

"For some time I've been looking to create affordable luxury in the kitchen," Smallbone said. "Fired Earth offers the perfect opportunity and is uniquely placed to do this, both in terms of manufacture and through its 58 shops. Together we'll be looking to extend the current ranges, which I'm looking forward to immensely."
