Grohe seizes massive counterfeit haul

March 2012 grohe

Grohe has achieved success with the destruction of more than 21,000 plagiarised sanitary fittings in the United Arab Emirates and thousands more in China.

Grohe worked in collaboration with the Sharjah Economic Development Department (SEDD) in the raid which saw the seizure of the items in the UAE. Detlef Schmitz, General Counsel of Grohe AG said: "Such partnerships between companies and government agencies are a decisive success factor in combating product piracy. We are all on the same page when it comes to protecting our economies and the concept of intellectual property. Together we can achieve important successes which send a clear message to product pirates."

As well as the success in the Middle East, Grohe has worked with China's Administration of Industry and Commerce (AIC) which has resulted in the seizure of thousands of counterfeited items in recent years. Companies caught making counterfeit goods are ordered to cease production of the products and pay damages.

Product plagiarism is reported to cause €200 - €300 billion worth of damage to the global economy each year. In Germany alone, it is believed to cost companies around €30bn a year.

Schmitz said: "Counterfeited products are bad for industry and consumers alike, this is why we will continue to push ahead with our efforts to protect our customers and our company against counterfeiters. We want all buyers of Grohe branded products to be sure that the product of their choice fulfils our commitment to quality, design, technology and sustainability."

Elsewhere, Grohe UK has appointed a new managing director - Maha M. El Kharbotly. Her most recent role was as global category director at Grohe headquarters in Dusseldorf, where she was responsible for sales and marketing of showers and thermostats. In that role, she increased the category by 15%.

Commenting on her new appointment Kharbotly said: "2012 will see Grohe launch an exciting, innovative range of UK geared products to the UK market including the design led Grohe Spa collections. My aim is to continue to evolve and cement Grohe's philosophy of Quality, Design and Technology."
