Finalists - Designer Award for Bathrooms - project up to £15,000

Back to the finalists

Mick Wellington - Design Republic

Cost: £15,000

What Mick says: “The icing on the design was the mixture of the lovely Aparici Otto Gris porcelain tiles which gave masculine colour and texture with a border of mirror running around the room to open up the space even more and add a bit of stylish bling.”

What the judges say: “A really nice linear design, with great product choice and colours. Mick has used the space really well in what is a typical British-sized bathroom.”

A penthouse apartment overlooking the Thames should be glamorous, but the existing en suite wasn’t up to scratch. Mick’s main brief was to increase the showering experience, difficult in such a small space with three oblique angles. He managed to squeeze in a 900mm x 900mm walkin with bespoke frameless screen.

Susan Quirke - Quirke McNamara Consultancy

Cost: £12,000

What Susan says:? “I proposed a large curved sink that sits on top of a black glass counter which has a storage inset into the front illuminated with blue LED lighting. The major feature of the space is the large oval mirror, which I lit with blue LED rope light.”

What the judges say: “A great use of lighting and product choice to create something very interesting - Quirke definitely lives up to her name. She doesn’t take the easy options and has done something that you can’t just pick out of a catalogue.”

While this is a very masculine bathroom the client was actually a professional woman in her late 40s. She wanted a bathroom just for her boyfriend with a wet room and dramatic lighting. Susan has blended glass and feature lighting with vibrant colours to come up with a truly theatrical experience.

Nicola Healy - Water & Stone Bathrooms

Cost: £14,700

What Nichola says: “The bespoke bath and basin were both made from copper with a tin interior. I used glass and mosaic on the floor and wooden furniture with wrought iron architecture.”

What the judges say: “It’s easy for themes to become pastiche very quickly, but Nicola has understood the style perfectly and absolutely kept on the right side of cheesy. A really great finish that shows proper imagination.”

A Moroccan-style bathroom in a Worcestershire period farmhouse - an interesting brief. Creating the room from a landing the well-travelled couple came to Nicola with the theme and she has used the Moorish flavour in the furniture and colour palette to come up with something that goes beyond the norm to create a stylish bathroom.

Louise Home - Ripples Tunbridge Wells

Cost: £12,500

What Louise says: “I used the same mosaic in the shower recess which could also be used as a seat and in recesses behind the roll-top bath. I highlighted these glamorous mosaics with LEDs operated separately from the down lights.”

What the judges say: “Louise has taken a brief that was inconclusive and come up with something dramatic with a boudoir feel. Nice products and a great use of the space.”

Louise’s clients started with a piece of the wallpaper which they loved but were afraid of using - could she make a bathroom around it? The room had no natural light, so she decided to go dark and dramatic using lighting to create emphasis. She raised the floor to incorporate the new plumbing with mosaic highlights to give a touch of theatrical.
