Finalists - Designer Award for Kitchens - contracts and housebuilders

Back to the finalists

Shaun Dunbar - Kitchens by J S Geddes

Cost: £119,000

What Shaun says: “My vision was to create a design using materials and finishes more often used in domestic situations, which in turn would give the Cookschool a completely individual, yet comfortable feel.”

What the judges say: “A fascinating design challenge for someone more used to domestic situations - and a brave decision from the client to go down that route. It looks great as a result and strikes the perfect balance between the commercial and the stylish.”

A really interesting project for Shaun as he was asked to come up with a design for a cookery school that included workstations, a demo area and dining room. The brief from the client was for a domestic feel, but with all the durability of a commercial installation. Shaun even persuaded the professional chefs to switch from gas to induction and from stainless steel worktops to Corian.

Susie Rumbold - Tessuto Interiors

Cost: £26,800

What Susie says: “The look was driven by a respect for the grandeur of the listed architecture. The clean, contemporary kitchens juxtaposed with the period surroundings created an eclectic look that was tranquil and sophisticated with a modern edge.”

What the judges say: “A really nice job for a modest budget considering the surroundings. It’s a very good use of space and creates an immediate draw when prospective buyers walk through the door.”

At the heart of London’s Marylebone, Susie was faced with a Georgian town house being returned to residential splendour after an office conversion some years before. The developer wanted kitchens designed with entertaining in mind that would be in keeping with the building’s listed status, while appealing to the international businessmen they were targeting.

Andrew Rizza - Dream Design

Cost: £45,000

What Andrew says: “By dividing it into an inner area containing the cooking appliances and an outer area forming the preparation space, I was able to create a sociable bar/club feel when the inner kitchen was concealed behind the feature sliding panel.”

What the judges say: “A very manly kitchen for a manly apartment with amazing views. This kitchen fits in perfectly for those who want to entertain.”

Client Wyatt Homes asked Andrew to come up with a kitchen for an exclusive apartment block in Sandbanks, Poole. Sea views provide the backdrop for these multi-million pounds residences, and his combination of a Siematic kitchen blending into the living space secured his services for all the other flats.

Lucy Colman - Porcelanosa

Cost: £32,000

What Lucy says: “This had to be a space that possible buyers could see themselves in. And with so much emphasis on quality, as long as we used our experience to include everything people would be expecting from a high-value property, then our client was happy to pay the cost.”

What the judges say: “A well laid-out and practical kitchen with nice product choices and contrasting finishes. This gives the client everything they wanted to sell these apartments.”

Park Circus is a traditional, midcentury curved terrace in Glasgow’s Park district. This four-storey town house has been redeveloped into three boutique apartments, but the developer wanted something with broader appeal compared with previous upmarket developments because of the current property market. Lucy’s classic yet modern feel complements the surroundings with dark oak, white Corian and clever mood lighting.
