What Janice says:

“The final design uses the strengths and scale of its surroundings then contrasts this with the tactile nature of the furniture to create an environment befitting my clients’ lifestyle. I became involved in the wider scale design of the room and all of the potential alterations and when the clients became excited with my suggestion of the door and dado rail solutions, the progression of the design leapt forward.”

PROJECT COST: £23,512

The brief:

The history of this house goes back over a century, now occupied by a family of six, with four children all under 12 years old. Originally a billiards room, it was converted into a kitchen many decades ago and the clients wanted the symmetry and scale to be utilised to give a visual impact while retaining the personality required for a family hub. A large AGA was a key feature, also as much worktop space as possible and storage for non-kitchen items. The clients also wanted to give the kitchen character and desirability, so that in several years’ time they will still ‘smile at the furniture when they walk into the room’.

PROJECT COST: £17,000

The brief:

In her own words, the client wanted Lorna to ‘create a kitchen that doesn’t look like a kitchen’ - a sleek, clutter-free, compact design with subtle appliances and generous storage. The property is an impressive Georgian town house located in Edinburgh’s old town. Used only as a holiday home, the client wanted to create a space quite unlike the kitchen in their traditional family home. The client wanted a dining area that the family could relax in and, as such, they didn’t want the kitchen to dominate the whole room. The Fisher & Paykel dishwasher drawers were specified and this dictated which other appliances could be included.

PROJECT COST: £24,800

The brief:

Karen’s client had one very strong vision - to create a ‘white dream’ in her kitchen, working with its purity and softness rather than fighting against the impracticalities. That aside, the kitchen still had to stand up to the demanding day-to-day life of a young, busy family home. The property, situated in the sought after area of Bothwell, was undergoing huge renovations internally as well as externally when Karen was approached, updating the house from its 1970s style origins so that the property looked revamped with a modern ‘chic elegance’ style throughout.

PROJECT COST: £22,584

The brief:

The brief for the kitchen was to create a layout sympathetic to the client’s love of cooking and entertaining. The social aspect of the kitchen was important and led to a desire for an island large enough to provide additional storage as well as room for three to four people to be seated while keeping the flow around the unit comfortable and still practical. The client was also keen to include a feature extractor that fitted with the overall style. The combination of materials and finishes was also very important to the client so Luke introduced Oak to bring a warming contrast to the kitchen.
