Trevor Scott: “Long-term planning impossible”

Leading KBB retailer, and former kbbreview columnist, Trevor Scott says that planning for a time when business returns to ‘normal’ still has to take a back seat to getting through the day-to-day realities of the current situation.

Speaking on the latest episode of the award-winning kbbreview Podcast, Scott describes the pandemic as the ‘curve ball of all curve balls’ and says that while business is good, the daily issues faced by KBB retailers don’t allow time for much forward planning.

“I think in all honesty there is a great degree of treading water,” he said. “We’re managing the process. We’ve got issues with staff getting Covid or having family members that have it so we’re having to juggle those arrangements when they isolate.

“The staff morale is something that we have to be very concerned about as we can’t push them too hard, they’ve got to be looked after all the way through this and rightly so, that’s the responsibility of an employer.

“The logistics are all affected by it too and, obviously, we can’t open the showroom so we’re always thinking about how we communicate with our customers.”

Trevor Scott is CEO of RFK, formerly Rugby Fitted Kitchens, has been going for 28 years and has showrooms in Rugby and Warwick as well as a successful contract business.

“I think, realistically, trying to have a long-term plan for how we’re going to come out the other side of this at this particular stage is less important than making sure that we are there on that day ready to go,” he said.

“And that means making sure that we’re financially stable, at the end of the day, we’ve got some significant coronavirus business loans (CBIL) that are going to need paying back at some point as do many others.”
