Amdea urges households to register UK’s 100 million ‘hidden appliances’

Next week (January 17-21) is Register My Appliance week when manufacturers, fire services and safety campaigners will be urging the public to register their appliances.

White-goods manufacturers association Amdea is running an eye-catching pop art campaign to highlight to owners the risks they run in not registering their appliances on the Register My Appliance web portal.

When they register, they can then be informed of any safety warnings or recalls that may be issued, in the same way as would happen with car owners.

Amdea says that the increase in online appliance purchases – up around 70% according to Euromonitor – and the advent of smart appliances will help improve traceability, but the association estimates that there are still some 100 million older appliances that are effectively untraceable.

Government figures show that there are around 212 million cooking, refrigeration and laundry appliances in use in the UK, but 49% of households have never registered an appliance.

And, with the drive to keep appliances running for longer, maintenance and registration, says Amdea, become even more important. Although one recent survey showed that many Brits don’t think their appliances are made to last.

A recent Amdea survey of 2,000 homeowners and renters showed that 83% of respondents did not know they could register an older appliance.

Amdea also points out that even appliances that were already in a property when the householder moved in, or ones they inherited, can be registered on the Register My Appliance site.

Amdea chief executive Paul Hide said: “The world has become a more ‘connected’ place, with advances in smart appliance technology adding hi-tech convenience to our lives. But, as we sit back and enjoy this new technology, we shouldn’t forget that – when it comes to safety repairs – any connectivity with manufacturers is only guaranteed when you take a few minutes to register. You can do this easily on Amdea’s registration portal. And registering older appliances is particularly key because it ensures you’ll never miss out on any important safety dialogue with the manufacturer.”

The Register My Appliance portal at www.registermyappliance.org.uk, was developed by Amdea and makes it quick and easy for households to register their new and old appliances. The data goes directly to the appliance manufacturer for use exclusively in the event of a product recall. The site also features a listing of appliance safety repairs and recalls, offers hints and tips on appliance safety and recommendations for appliance care.
