Worcester-based stone fabricator Athena Surfaces says it has been preparing for a public backlash against unsafe stone fabrication “for years”, stating that safe manufacturing “has always been a priority” for the company.
The fabricator, which was established back in 2014, says it believes it has always been at the forefront when it comes to safe fabrication. According to the company, its production includes the use of water to mitigate dust, and the use of full positive flow PPE. Athena Surfaces says that by following these measures, it is “effectively removing the risk of exposure to silica dust” for workers.
According to a statement released this week by the company, it was prompted to remind its customers and colleagues about its values following recent headlines about engineered stone surfaces.
Earlier this week, a leading London doctor called upon the UK government to consider a ban on artificial stone worktops, following a rise in identified silicosis cases. However, trade bodies and suppliers have argued that there are other, less drastic measures that the industry can take, such as enforcing stringent health and safety standards, or developing products with markedly lower silica content.
Athena Surfaces claims to be “the only company that has had the foresight to anticipate these challenges and get ready to provide a solution”, referring to its range of porcelain surfaces, which it says are also durable and hardy against UV damage.
The statement reads: “With the recent news highlighting the dangers of silica dust exposure, we want to remind our customers and colleagues that we have always prioritised safety in our manufacturing processes
“Athena Surfaces has been preparing for this for years. We have invested in a porcelain worktop processing factory, even during economic downturns when others reduced spending.
“Our porcelain worktops are the answer to the market’s needs, and we are confident that our customers will appreciate the quality, affordability, and safety that we offer.”
