Design Case Study: Harmony Reimagined
Architect Louis Russell of Detail in Glasgow explains how he harmonised an outdated bathroom space that was split across two separate zones.
Interview: Matt Baker & Louis Russell
Our private client lives and works in Kelvinside, Glasgow, and has vast experience within the local residential property market.
The Property: Kelvinside property in Glasgow.
The Client: The client has 30 years experience within the residential property market and is one of the leading figures in valuations and sales in Glasgow.
The Brief: The client wanted a complete reimagining of the space so it could be an environment that allowed for pause and relaxation.
They asked us to redesign an existing bathroom which no longer met their aspirations for their home. The client wanted a space that not only worked as a bathroom but also as an environment that allowed for pause and relaxation.
The existing bathroom was split into two different zones with outdated bathroom fittings. The client came to us to completely reimagine the bathroom in order to unlock the potential of the space. All new fittings were required along with tiling, lighting, soft furnishing, and a full redecoration of the room.
This meant creating a layout which prioritised open floor space for freestanding furniture and ease of movement, while also providing neat storage solutions so that the space could be kept clear from clutter. We used a limited palette of materials to promote calmness and beauty.
We developed design proposals through 2D drawings and 3D visualisations to help project the potential of the space and aid in design development.
The outcome is a harmonious and calming bathroom with a limited palette of materials which includes oak fitted wardrobes, large format marble tiles, light timber effect porcelain floor tiles with electric underfloor heating and brass fittings.
