The collapse of Moores Furniture Group was driven by a period of sustained losses, with more than £30m owed to creditors, according to a newly filed administrators’ report.
The West Yorkshire-based kitchen manufacturer, which employed around 450 people across its manufacturing and head office operations, entered administration in January after suffering significant trading losses and running out of working capital.
Administrators say that in the twelve months leading up to the administration, sales volumes at Moores “suffered significantly” after the insolvency of one of its major customers. As a result, Moores was facing a funding requirement of approximately £2m going into 2026.
The report states that Moores had already undergone restructuring efforts, including cost reduction measures and attempts to secure new investment. However, these measures proved insufficient to offset the speed at which cash reserves were being depleted. The business became increasingly reliant on creditor support and extended payment terms to manage day-to-day liquidity.
Once the business entered administration, parts of the business were sold to Wren Kitchens’ contract department in a pre-pack deal for £200,000. The transaction was structured as an asset purchase rather than a share acquisition. This means Wren acquired selected assets – including plant and machinery, intellectual property and certain contracts – but did not assume historic liabilities.
By the time of administration, the group had built up substantial liabilities, with the report showing that unsecured creditors are owed in excess of £30m, including trade suppliers, landlords and other service providers. HMRC is also listed as a significant creditor, reflecting unpaid VAT and PAYE liabilities.
Secured lenders are expected to recover a portion of their lending from asset realisations, but unsecured creditors will almost certainly face a shortfall.
