Kitchen design: Best of both worlds

In today’s ever-evolving world of kitchen design, the demand for blended-style spaces – where traditional elegance seamlessly integrates with modern innovation – is on the rise, says Natalie Fry, creative director of Grid Thirteen

After 25 years of designing personalised kitchen spaces I have begun to notice that, increasingly, clients choices are being limited to a single style of kitchen cabinetry.

But I firmly believe that this is the opposite to what they actually want. Clients want kitchens that reflect their individuality, free from compromise or any restrictions.

They are looking for kitchens that blend many styles, combining contrasting looks to create spaces that are both functional and personalised. Driven by changing lifestyles, technological advancements, and homeowners’ renewed appreciation for craftsmanship, this style of kitchen combines timeless elegance with modern innovation.

Bespoke beauty

Smart appliances and technology make it easier to merge different aesthetics, while artisanal details add character and interest. The result is a versatile approach that celebrates individuality, offering the best of both worlds in a kitchen space: classic charm mixed with cutting-edge functionality.

By understanding a client’s unique style, we seamlessly blend premium furniture styles to enhance the architecture and luxurious feel in their homes.

Our design team works with both homeowners and design partners to create this type of design by creating schemes that have a seamless synergy of different styles of cabinetry and furniture to create a truly unique design that reflects each of our clients’ individuality and needs.

For example, integrating cutting-edge innovation from leading European brands renowned for their technology, with timeless hand-crafted furniture, allows us to create kitchens that blend British heritage with modern European innovation.

So each kitchen feels as though it has naturally evolved within a client’s home – and is beautifully tailored to their lifestyle, preferences and architectural surroundings.

Our guiding principle to a successful fusion-style approach is listening carefully to our client’s individual needs, approaching each project as an opportunity to really push the boundaries of luxury home design to surpass client expectations. By working closely with a client to understand their needs and design-style preferences, our designers can explore all possible design approaches.

Designers can achieve the perfect balance in creating a combined-in-style kitchen through collaboration, meticulous planning, and a deep understanding of blending contemporary and traditional elements.

One of our design partners – SieMatic, for example – is renowned for its sleek lines, intelligent storage and sophistication providing the ideal foundation for layering texture, warmth, and individuality with our in-house handcrafted furniture and cabinetry.

This provides an overall design look that doesn’t allow one style to dominate, as the careful contrast of this design approach perfectly blends the interplay of materials, finishes and detailing.

Juxtaposing contemporary cabinetry with the beauty of hand-finished cabinetry and luxury marble or natural stone surfaces enhances the overall aesthetic, so each of our kitchen designs feels luxurious, inviting and individual.

Style fusion

We also often introduce bespoke wine walls, handcrafted pantries and bespoke furniture finished in contrasting rich, warm tones within a contemporary-lined kitchen scheme as it softens the contemporary aesthetic with intricate detailing or heritage-inspired craftsmanship finishes.

These cabinet material choices play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between contemporary and bespoke elements. Sleek, handleless matte lacquered cabinetry, for instance, contrasts beautifully with handcrafted elements to provide tactile, individual details such as delicate inlays, exposed dovetail joints and engraved details.

A seamless blend of furniture styles isn’t always restricted to a contrast between modern and traditional. For example, we recently included two door styles from our Darling Maeve collection to bring plenty of charm and a traditional-meets-modern character to one client’s recent project.

We wanted to add interest as the kitchen was such a large space, the solution was to combine our sleek Harewood flat-fronted doors with an elegant cock bead detail which contrasted with the Lister door, which provided an elegant Shaker style scheme, but with a nod to a more classic look.

While cabinetry materials bridge the gap between contemporary and bespoke elements, appliances also play a pivotal role in achieving a harmonious blended design. Integrating state-of-the-art technology from brands like Sub-Zero & Wolf, Miele and Gaggenau ensures that functionality meets design aesthetic.

As the demand for personalisation in kitchen spaces grows, this fusion-style design approach ensures that every kitchen can be as individual as the people who use it, with a beautiful blend of design styles and complementary furniture pieces that are personal to each client’s aspirations, resulting in truly individual interior solutions without compromise.
