Dulux names first-ever ‘trio of shades’ as Colour of the Year

Mellow Flow, one of Dulux’s Rhythm of Blues shades

After almost 25 years of annual trend forecasting, Dulux has named more than one paint shade as its highly-anticipated Colour(s) of the Year for 2026.

This years trio of shades are collectively named “Rhythm of Blues”, and are said to have decided upon by “a panel of colour experts and design leaders across the globe”.

This year marks the first time in the company’s history that it has launched a whole collection of paint shades instead of a single Colour of the Year. According to Dulux’s creative director and colour expert, Marianne Shillingford, the change to tradition helps the company move away from a focus on specific trends.

“Blue has been the world’s favourite colour for years – but it’s far from one note,” she explained. “It delivers a sense of fluidity, relief, stillness and freedom, which is exactly what’s needed in today’s fast-paced world. Its roots in nature give us something to connect to, as well.”

Dulux calls the shades a “versatile” family of blues that reflect the different paces of modern life, “from moments of calm reflection, to carefree bliss and bold fun – giving us the freedom to choose our own tempo”, with each colour supposed to capture a distinct mood.

Mellow Flow is described as a soft light blue that Dulux says brings a sense of clarity. Meanwhile, Slow Swing is a deep blue that is said to offer grounding and reassurance. Finally, Free Groove is a “vibrant, energising blue with a playful, creative edge”.

Marianne Shillingford also added: “When we see light blues like Mellow Flow, we might think of soothing springs or sunrise skies, for example, or be reminded of the deep ocean’s chilled stillness with a dark blue like Slow Swing. Whereas Free Groove offers a more intense heat, like that of summer pool parties. Some of us are slowing the beat to recharge and find balance, while others are looking to crank up the volume and create spaces that are simply fun.

“Rhythm of Blues gives us the opportunity to do both – it’s a family of colours that can soothe, steady or excite, depending on how you play it. This collection offers colours you can find peace in, and colours you can dance to, centred around three distinct rhythms to offer endless possibilities for changing the pace of your space.”

Dulux’s 2025 colour of the year was a bright and positive yellow shade called “True Joy”, and the year before that, the 2024 Colour of the Year was named as Sweet Embrace, described as a “delicate, optimistic and modern tone that is understated and comforting”.
