Case study: Vacation-inspired vision

The appeal of a project like Louisa’s south-west London home is obvious: a complete transformation of a dated Victorian terrace into an aspirational space that feels closer to a boutique retreat than a suburban property.
Louisa, who lives with her husband, baby, and Cavapoo Alfie, knew it was a long-term undertaking. “We recognised its potential and were keen to embrace the challenge. We love period properties, especially the charm of Victorian homes, so we were committed to restoring this house to its former splendour from the get-go.”
The scale of work was significant: demolition of the old extension, stripping rooms back to brick, raising ceilings, and installing a new rear addition supported by a bespoke cranked-steel “picture-frame” structure.
For kitchen designers, this level of planning provided both challenge and opportunity – and Louisa knew she wanted Devol on board. “Devol was exceptional throughout the project. Their communication was great and their work consistently accurate. We thoroughly enjoyed every step of the process. We went for several bespoke elements, including deeper units for our coffee station and drinks cabinet.”
Hosting was a key part of the brief, with an island hob and rear sink chosen over the more common sink-on-island option. The generously sized pantry has also become a favourite, offering storage and cool conditions that are ideal for baking. Light and glazing were equally important considerations.
Conservation rules meant careful material selection, but the solution – combining arched Crittall doors with a bold three-metre “waterfall” glass installation – defines different living zones while keeping the space fluid. And the investment has paid off. “We’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with our builders. Their incredibly positive approach and dedication was instrumental in transforming this space into the high-specification area you see today.”
