Showroom of the month: Herringbone House, Canterbury

Located near the gates of Canterbury Cathedral, the new Herringbone House showroom offers true bespoke luxury in Kent’s historic city.

At a glance, the Herringbone House showroom could be mistaken for Liberty London’s smaller sister — it certainly wouldn’t look out of place on Great Marlborough Street with its similar Tudor architecture.

The new showroom opened last September and signals the impressive expansion of the company from kitchen buyer/seller to a full service kitchen design and manufacturer. The team has designed and made almost everything in the new space, including tables and seating.

Director Elly Simmons explains that the idea was to make the space feel like a luxury hotel, rather than a showroom. “We really spent some time thinking about the extra touches like the lighting, artwork, and how the space will be used.

“Almost all of it is a working space that we can use for demos.” The bar and wine rooms are also dual purpose and can be used for events and supper clubs.

When asked to name her favourite part of the showroom, Simmons says: “Everyone has a different opinion but I love the bar and library area as they combine everything I like into one space.

“But I know my husband [fellow director and founder Will Durrant] would probably say the dressing room display, as we have an inlay door that we can custom CNC, which is an affordable option if clients need to keep the costs down for a child’s wardrobe or other parts of the house in larger projects. It’s just something we can offer that isn’t the standard shaker style door.”

When it comes to selecting suppliers to work with, Simmons says they always start with British brands. “They are normally the high quality that we’re looking for. We select products that have a good sustainability record, too.”

The future is exciting for Herringbone House, with plans to further push the showroom as a bookable event space and also the renovation of two floors of the building to create luxury Airbnb-style accommodation – all with Herringbone House manufacturing, such as bars, bathroom furniture, and bed headboards.

This move makes perfect sense as a lot of the company’s clients come from London or even further afield like Scotland and France. “It’s a nice way to show off not just our kitchens, but what else we can make,” explains Simmons.

Herringbone House may well sit in its own corner of Kent, but its reputation is fast growing internationally – and long may it continue.
