Good news – Koralia Hume

As we continue our ‘Good News’ series by shining a light on the positive developments driving our sector forward, we ask Koralia Hume from Quarrybank Boutique Bathrooms to share her hopeful news…

I’ve always believed our sector can surprise with its resilience and creativity – and this year has proved it, even if it hasn’t been easy. It’s taken more thinking outside the box and more hand-holding with clients.

Crucially, we haven’t followed the so-called “peaks and troughs”. The market moves too quickly for old rhythms; this year we saw a busy July and August and a quieter September. The constant is agility. As I file our accounts, we’re showing a turnover increase of 85% with a very healthy margin – clear proof that the approach is working.

So how did we achieve it? By continually reviewing what works, adjusting fast and executing. We’ve withstood quieter spells and maintained strong sales. We’re only three years old, trading through one of the toughest periods, while three local showrooms have closed in the past year – yet we’re growing from strength to strength. We’ve even expanded our in-house capability by hiring another fitter to keep quality tight end-to-end.

Our strategy includes a true 360° approach to marketing. Alongside traditional channels – leaflet distribution, community open days and features in high-end local magazines – we’ve amplified our digital presence. Meeting customers wherever they are, with imaginative campaigns rather than slashing prices, has driven a clear rise in enquiries.

We’ve also launched a sister company, Quarrybank Construction, in response to the sheer volume of bathroom-led enquiries for wider renovation. Here too we’re seeing a surge in home redevelopment – extensions out and up – signalling confidence that naturally flows into kitchens and bathrooms. That first-hand pipeline data gives me real conviction that bathroom demand will remain robust; it’s reassuring to have the numbers to back the positivity.

On a wider stage, I’m encouraged by how united the sector is becoming. In my role as KBSA Bathroom Champion, I see suppliers and retailers collaborating in genuinely supportive ways. Membership is growing rapidly, which builds togetherness and resilience and, ultimately, delivers a better customer experience.

I’ve always believed that like attracts like, so my mindset is always positive – but positivity alone won’t move the dial. Things change when we do. Sitting back and lamenting tough trading won’t help; we tend to get more of what we focus on. The businesses that will thrive are those that re-evaluate honestly, identify what works and what doesn’t, and take bold action – not those waiting at a desk for customers to appear.

The bathroom industry has every reason to feel optimistic and – but optimism is only powerful when matched with action.
