Good news: Tina Riley
As we continue our ‘Good News’ series by shining a light on the positive developments driving our sector forward, Tina Riley from Modern Homes shares her own piece of hopeful news…
Having been asked for some good news, I am very pleased to report that all is positive and good in our world.
Our financial year end for the past year July 31st showed the same turnover as the year before. Yes, we had a quiet July and August for footfall in the showroom, but we always put this down to two things – holidays, and for our profile of client, ‘grandparents on childcare duties’. But we did enjoy being able to catch up on the eternal list of things to do.
Recent footfall is up again and we are busy, but the client’s expectations are ideal as are all planning for projects in 2026 .
Bathrooms have been consistently busy and steady – as ever kitchens have been more up and down.
By the beginning of September we had closed our installation diary for this year and have currently got eight confirmed projects booked in for the New Year with the potential of another couple of full-house projects we are currently working on.
By Christmas, our goal is to have work booked for four teams until Easter. I love asking my full-time bathroom installer his holiday dates in September for next year as he is fully booked until April already!
Don’t get me wrong, as usual we are having supply chain issues – and as always client management issues – but these are always much more manageable with a full order book.
What are we doing right, we asked ourselves ? I firmly believe it is a combination of things: many repeat clients, lots of good referrals , and the ability to do multiple rooms for a client.
It does make life easier when a client you have dealt with for over 30 years, in the same house. That’s two kitchens, two shower rooms, a bathroom, and now, due to a leaky tap, that client visited the showroom again, picked her finishes, booked her install date and we haven’t even quoted her yet! But maybe you have to stay in business for nearly 60 years to achieve this?
I know it is important to know what else is going on in the world around you but over the years I have learnt that if you absorb too much bad news it does impact your own mental health which as a business owner is not ideal. Most of this is out of our hands so we find it better to concentrate on us, and so far 2025 has been good and it’s looking like 2026 could be even better!
