BSH offers repairs for ‘explosion risk’ gas hobs

Appliance manufacturer BSH has issued a voluntary safety notice for two of its built-in gas hobs sold in the UK and Ireland.

From February 21, the company will provide a free-of-charge repair on its Bosch NGU4151DB and Neff T20S31N0 built-in gas hobs, manufactured between 2009 and 2011 – a total of 3,900 units.

BSH stressed that this is a purely precautionary measure, following a global recall of 170,000 freestanding models (HGV74W255A and HGV74W355A – not sold in the UK), also manufactured over the same time frame. BSH identified a problem with a damaged gas connector, which is also used on the built-in models listed above.

In a statement, BSH said: “Under certain conditions, there could be an uncontrolled release of gas and, in extremely rare cases, a risk of explosion.”

BSH said it had “extensively analysed” the technical causes of the problem and the range of potentially affected appliances. While it believes that the risk to households from the damaged gas connector is “extremely rare”, it said it couldn’t completely rule out a safety risk.

Although there have been no incidents in the UK or Ireland so far, BSH said it had decided to extend the repair action, as the “safety of our customers is our top priority”.
