One Last Thing: Sam Fisher

With kbb Birmingham now just a couple of days away, we asked event director Sam Fisher what she'd do if she was in charge of the industry, what she wishes we'd all talk about more, and who's inspired her along the way

When people outside the industry ask what I do I say…

I run design events, then notoriously have to explain that they’re exhibitions, not events, and then not gallery exhibitions but trade shows…by that point they’re fairly uninterested! Saying that, I have had friends and family visit the exhibitions I work on and it’s really lovely for them to be able to see what I actually do!

If I was in charge of this industry I would…

Make sure every kitchen came with a built-in coffee machine that never runs out of coffee!

What I love most about my job is…

Being onsite at the shows. Working all year (or two!) towards something and seeing the team put such hard work into them to then seeing it all come to fruition onsite and watching people enjoy the show is so rewarding. That and the amazing people I’ve met who I’m now lucky to call friends.

The thing people might not know about me is…

I go spinning 5-6 times a week, normally at 6.30am before work (smug, me?!)

I dressed in a toilet costume and paraded around – luckily the picture has been ‘lost’!

The work story I always tell to make people laugh is…

I dressed up in a toilet costume and paraded around one of the kbb exhibitions, Jon Johnston (sales director) was dressed as a tap. All in aid of raising money for charity but still fairly mortifying. Luckily the picture of us has been ‘lost’!

The industry person I most admire is…

Andy Bishop, who we tragically lost last year. I’d known him for 20 years and his exceptional skill of integrating himself into any industry he worked in was inspiring. He had embraced the kbb and installer industries over the past few years and become a much-loved personality.

I wish this industry would talk more about…

The incredible craftsmanship and skill that goes into creating these spaces. From the designers to the installers, there’s so much talent in this industry that deserves to be celebrated.

I wish this industry would talk less about…

The idea of a ‘perfect’ kitchen or bathroom. Perfection is subjective, and what really matters is creating spaces that work for the people who use them every day.

My biggest professional inspiration is…

Jane Risby, my MD when I first began my journey in exhibitions. She infused every show we ran – mainly interiors and kbb Birmingham at the time – with incredible personality and creativity. Although we no longer work together, she remains a great friend and a constant influence. I often find myself considering, “What would Jane think?” when making decisions, and her impact continues to guide me to this day.

My proudest professional achievement is….

Not just one single moment, but the ongoing privilege of creating events that leave a lasting impression on the industry and its people. From the creativity showcased at Decorex to the innovation celebrated at KBB Birmingham, I’m incredibly proud to have been part of this journey for over 20 years. Sticking it out in this ever-evolving and often tough industry and still doing what I love is something I’m proud of!

If I could go back to the day I started in this industry, I would tell myself…

Don’t be afraid to speak up. As a young exec, I was often hesitant to share my opinions, waiting until I felt confident enough to do so. Looking back, I realise that every voice matters, and there’s no such thing as a wrong answer when contributing ideas. Speaking up early not only builds confidence but also opens doors to growth and collaboration.

In ten years’ time I will be…

Hopefully still in the design industry in some way, maybe even still running kbb Birmingham 2036, but also spending more time on the beach!

I dance in my kitchen to…

Alright by Red Carpet. It’s an incredible house tune that holds a special place in my heart – my great friend, who also happens to be KBB Birmingham’s group marketing director, had a singer perform it live at her wedding and I’ll never forget it!

The song I always sing in the shower is…

Whatever’s been on the radio before I get in the shower. I listen to Radio X (don’t judge!) so it’s normally something like Green Day or the Kooks, taking me back to my mid-20’s rock/indie roots.
