Stuart Dance: ‘Seek support from others and never stop innovating’

The managing director at InHouse Inspired Room Design believes that despite a difficult past few years, the market is still full of opportunities for those willing to collaborate and make their mark.

Q: How’s business compared with last year?

“I think we can all agree that we’ve had a couple of strange years. We’re still experiencing a cost-of-living crisis and rising inflation. We’ve also had massive global political instability, and this has impacted consumer confidence. But despite this, business has still been consistent. Our independent retail network has been growing well and what helps is that Schüller’s range is incredibly flexible – we can offer designs where budgets are limited but we can also let inspiration run wild for more luxury designs. And we are optimistic. The UK market is a real focus for the Schüller group. We have high growth ambitions for Schüller, next125 and other brands in the UK. We do see the market picking up towards the end of 2026 and strengthening into 2027 as well.

“next125 also recently opened their first ever UK concept store. It was superb to support the launch with Gideon Robinson, one of the UK’s top independent retailers. The store has been a real success and we’re already looking at further options.”

Q: What are the main challenges facing the sector and how are you tackling them?

“It’s no secret that the market is facing challenges. I think the most important thing you can do is to manage your own reactions to what’s happening. Turn off the negative news because it’s just disheartening. Instead extend your network, seek advice and support from other retailers, your suppliers, and your partners. Never stop innovating. Use quieter times to get your systems and processes sorted so operationally you’re really strong and never compromise on the customer experience.

“We’re always here to support our retailers through tough times. Schüller now being a fully owned business in the UK demonstrates our commitment to supporting independent retailers. I can confidently say our support is second to none. We’re always on the phone, we’ve got great design support to help create stunning showroom displays, we invest in our manufacturing facilities in Germany and are in full control of our operations end-to-end.

“The KBB show is the perfect opportunity for retailers to get inspiration, find support, try new ideas and revitalise their business. That’s why it’s so important and why we’re delighted to be exhibiting and demonstrating our support for the UK market. We also have the ability to run training sessions out of our showroom in Hexham, and we host regular trips over to Germany for retailers to see the facilities, factories, showrooms and receive training.”
