Asbestos alert as fire destroys PJH warehouse

A massive fire has broken out at the Manchester warehouse of major kitchen, bedroom and bathroom distributor PJH.

The warehouse, on the Towngate Business Centre in Walkden, is one of the company’s main bathroom supply hubs for multiple chain B&Q.

However, a PJH spokesman told kbbreview that the depot didn’t supply products to any of its nationwide network of independent retailers.

The fire began at around 1.30am this morning [Thursday] and was brought under control by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Services at 6.30am, closing a section of the A6 for several hours.

Local news reports have suggested the former Lucozade factory contains asbestos and that it has been 90% destroyed.

Ten fire crews are said to have tackled the blaze at its height but although the warehouse was occupied at the time, nobody is thought to have been injured.

In a short statement PJH said it would be “working closely with the fire services and Salford Council during investigations into the cause, which at this time is unknown”.

PJH chief executive Richard George added: “I am grateful no one was injured during the fire and would like to thank the swift action of Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Services for bringing the fire under control and for limiting the extent of the incident. Whilst the cause of the fire is yet unknown and investigations ongoing, I am unable to comment or speculate on the incident.”
