GDHA to stop production of plastic-backed refrigeration

Glen Dimplex Home Appliances (GDHA) has joined other brands with a 100% commitment to metal-backed refrigeration and it will stop production of all its plastic-backed refrigeration products by the end of May.

Recently, other appliance brands have committed to metal backing and these include Electrolux, Whirlpool and Gorenje.

On January 1, 2019 there will be regulation changes, which require the backing on fridges and fridge-freezers to meet a higher level of flame retardance.

Ahead of this deadline, GDHA will be redeveloping its plastic-backed products across its freestanding and integrated cooling portfolio. It will be fitting all of its Lec, Stoves and Britannia-branded refrigeration products with metal backing.

Stuart Netscher, head of category for cooling at Glen Dimplex Home Appliances, said: “We pride ourselves on consistently reviewing the design and manufacture of our products to ensure that they perform well and comply with the latest safety legislation. We are aware that recent media reports linked to plastic backed fridges have caused concern amongst consumers and we want our customers to feel 100% confident in our brands.

“The majority of our products already have metal backings, this change ensures we will have metal backing on 100% of our refrigeration range of products, ahead of January 1, 2019.”
