Houzz highlights top emerging design trends for 2022

Online home renovation and design platform Houzz has listed media walls, boot rooms, dog showers and creating a seamless transition between the indoors and outdoors among its top emerging trends for 2022.

The 2022 Houzz UK Emerging Summer Trends Report is based on UK-based online searches from its community of homeowners, home design enthusiasts and renovation professionals between January and March 2022 and highlights the percentage growth over the same period in 2021.

The biggest increase in the number of searches was seen in ‘navy bedrooms’ with a 218% increase followed by ‘bedroom panelling’ at 200%, but a significant trend was also highlighted in indoor/outdoor living. Searches for Crittall-style doors seamlessly linking the indoors with an outdoor spaces were up by 199%, while 56% more people searched for outdoor kitchens.

Sun rooms were also mentioned by 56% of searchers on Houzz, as people look to make more use of their gardens.

And linked to outdoor activities, there was a 51% increase in searches for a dog showers, and a 36% increase in those seeking boot rooms, with a 27% rise in interest in utility rooms and larders.

Moving indoors, there was a surge in curiosity from those searching for things that would give them a cosy space where they could relax and be entertained – media walls (up 187%), TV walls (+63%), TV rooms (+46%), corner sofas (+24%), snugs (+48%) and reading nooks (+50%) all featured.

Luxury bedrooms was another strong trend, with navy bedrooms top of the list (+218%), followed by bedroom panelling (+200%), and then hotel-inspired bedrooms (+63%), built-in wardrobes (+32%), en-suite bathrooms (+25%) and dressing rooms (+23%) and saunas (+21%).

On the practical side, surfaces that last also proved popular, with 97% more people searching for resin flooring, 78% more naming micro-cement and 36% more searches for granite surfaces.

Many of the trends listed, such as outdoor kitchens, dog showers and boot rooms and larders have already been adopted by many KBB retailers. The survey, however, spotlights many more opportunities for enterprising independent kitchen studios to turn their expertise to new areas and specialisms.
