Second Scottish referendum ‘bad for business’

Two leading Scottish KBB retailers have slammed Nicola Sturgeon’s decision to hold a second referendum on Scottish independence in the wake of Brexit.

The First Minister of Scotland revealed that a second referendum would be called between autumn 2018 and spring 2019.

However, Scottish retailers have hit back saying Sturgeon (pictured) is being “irresponsible” and putting “egos and personal ambition” ahead of doing what’s best for the country.

“Nicola Sturgeon’s decision to seek a second independence referendum is as predictable as it is depressing,” said Derek Miller, co-owner of Scope Bathrooms in Glasgow. “Having been through it all in 2014, Scottish business now has to face a further period of uncertainty on top of the UK decision to leave the European Union. Ms Sturgeon is being irresponsible in the extreme in forcing more division on our country and creating further uncertainty. No good will come of it for business. Once again, business owners have to succeed in spite of politicians’ best efforts to make life difficult.”

Jim Geddes, managing director of Kitchens by JS Geddes in Kilmarnock, believes another referendum would have even worse repercussions for businesses the second time around.

“Scotland’s businesses will again see challenging times due to another referendum,” he said. “Nicola Sturgeon has allowed egos and personal ambitions to get in the way of doing what is best for the country. Pre-2014, the building industry in Scotland was extremely positive. The 2014 referendum then caused an instant downturn in business. The next referendum will do the same – and even worse if the outcome is for independence.”
