‘See shrinking kitchens as an opportunity’, designers urged

Designers should view shrinking kitchen sizes positively rather than as a challenge, Virtual Worlds managing director Nathan Maclean (pictured) has argued.

Maclean claimed that smaller kitchen spaces could offer designers the chance to show off their creativity and flair and offer solutions that “delight” customers.

“House sizes have been shrinking for a number of years, creating new challenges for both homeowners and designers,” explained Maclean. “But the reduction in space can be offset by clever design work – in fact it can be a great opportunity for a designer to show a bit of creativity and work on a solution that their customer will love for years to come.

“Tricks such as incorporating lighter colours, floor-to-ceiling storage and the use of materials such as glass can all make a room seem much bigger and brighter without requiring any additional living space.

“And they can provide the opportunity for designers to increase profits by up-selling creative solutions that help to make the space feel much more pleasant and open.”

Research from LABC Warranty, a structural warranty provider, revealed that the size of the nation’s kitchens has shrunk by 13% in new-build homes since the 1960s.

This, it pointed out, contrasts with the growing trend for kitchen islands, which often require a larger space to maximise their potential.

“Of course, for designers looking to show off these designs in the best possible light, they will need a CAD solution that truly shows off their work,” Maclean concluded.
