Magnet picks cherry-red Morello as its colour of the year

National kitchen retailer Magnet has selected “Morello” to be its colour of the year for 2027, and says it believes it is the first UK kitchen retailer to make its own annual colour prediction.

Magnet says its chosen cherry-red shade reflects its vision for “warmer, more expressive kitchen interiors”, and that it offers designers a rich colour that works across both classic and contemporary schemes.

Choosing a “colour of the year” has now become an annual tradition for many brands across the design sector. Paint company Pantone is believed to have kick-started the trend when it picked cerulean blue as its first-ever colour of the year in 2000. Other paint companies followed suit in later years, such as Dulux, who (in contrast to Magnet) chose a “soft and radiant” green shade to be its colour of the year for 2027.

“We sampled a lot of cherry burgundy-reds before landing on Morello,” explained Laura Townsend, design manager at Magnet. “It had to be a true deep cherry to translate beautifully into a kitchen, not too bright and not too neutral. Being British at heart, we also wanted a shade that married traditional elegance with modern boldness.”

“Deep cherry reds return to the catwalk and high street every autumn and now they are moving into our homes. As interiors shift from minimalism towards comfort and character, dark, rich colours are replacing stark neutrals. What surprises our customers is how versatile they are, mixing easily with natural wood, brass, marble and bold prints. Burgundy is fast becoming the new black in kitchens.”

“Lots of our customers worry that they will regret a bold colour, but actually, just because you’ve gone with a safer colour doesn’t mean you won’t regret it,” Townsend added. “Your kitchen is for you, not for anyone else – forget outside noise and focus on a colour that will bring you joy.”
