Back to black for kitchen trends

The trend for darker kitchens is gaining popularity, with white falling out of favour, according to a new survey.

The ‘Living Space Kitchen’ trend report from drawer components manufacturer Hettich found that in future, kitchen furniture and electrical appliances would be adorned with black surfaces.

This report was based on kitchen trends presented by leading kitchen manufacturers in the final quarter of the year, as well as innovations and products presented at this year’s IFA show in Berlin.

Furniture trends in general are going darker, according to the report, with the exception of refrigerators, which are moving into focus with bright accent colours.

Additionally, consumers are now more likely to have a say in creating their own surface designs.

The trend for open-plan is continuing, with kitchens becoming an area for socialising. Kitchen furniture design is reflecting the way the parts of the home are merging, with darker fronts that look more homely, according to Hettich.

Other trends gaining coming to the fore include sliding doors and height-adjustable elements that are gentle on the back and demonstrate how ergonomic and easily accessible storage space can be.
