Arçelik receives Prince of Wales Terra Carta Seal for sustainability

Beko parent Arçelik is among the first recipients of the inaugural Terra Carta Seal award for companies that are demonstrating their commitment to sustainability.

The award was presented at a ceremony attended by HRH The Prince of Wales at the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow to the CEOs of the 45 recipient companies.

The Terra Carta Seal initiative was originally launched on January 11 by HRH The Prince of Wales at the One Planet Summit in France to provide a practical roadmap for achieving a sustainable future. It forms part of the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) that he launched at Davos in January 2020.

The Prince said: “The Terra Carta Seal recognises those organisations which have made a serious commitment to a future that is much more sustainable, and puts Nature, People and the Planet at the heart of the economy. We all need to make changes if we are to preserve the planet for our children and grandchildren and these businesses have pledged to make it easier for us all to do so.

“The seal is being awarded to companies which hold a leadership position within their industry and have credible transition roadmaps, underpinned by globally recognised, scientific metrics for achieving net zero by 2050 or, frankly I hate to say, considerably earlier.”

The Terra Carta Seal is said to acknowledges that each industry is at a different stage of their journey to control emissions and that companies must be supported as they take steps in a more positive direction.

Arçelik chief executive Hakan Bulgurlu met the Prince of Wales to celebrate their award and commitment to the battle against climate change, and to discuss the challenges individual organisations face, examine solutions and the actions necessary to further the transition to net zero by 2050.

The Prince said he was deeply encouraged by Arçelik’s commitment to reducing Scope 1&2 GHG emissions by 30% and Scope 3 emissions from the use of sold products by 15% by 2030.

Bulgurlu said of the award: “It’s a great honour to be one of the leading companies recognised by His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales and to receive the inaugural Terra Carta Seal. Creating a sustainable future and setting ambitious targets is the number-one priority for Arçelik, and receiving the accolade demonstrates that we are living these commitments as a business. We are committed to the creation of genuinely sustainable markets, which care for nature, people and the planet.”

With more than 40,000 employees worldwide, Arçelik’s global operations include sales and marketing offices in 48 countries, with products available in 145 countries, and 28 production facilities in nine countries and 12 brands – Arçelik, Beko, Grundig, Blomberg, ElektraBregenz, Arctic, Leisure, Flavel, Defy, Altus, Dawlance, Voltas Beko.
